Frontline mental health services across the UK for adolescents are failing to cope with increasingly overwhelming demand. The Children's Commissioner 2016 Lightning Review identified systemic problems with CAMHS provision across the country. These included escalating treatment referral thresholds, diagnositic & treatment delays, restricted access to services and poor treatment recycling rates.
AS Tracking provides an opportunity to test an alternative approach to adolescent social and mental wellbeing.

The three key contributions that AS Tracking could make to the health and education sectors are:
MENTAL HEALTH COST REDUCTION: AS Tracking provides a rigorous investment in building a long-term, evidence-based, whole-school screening approach to the child and adolescent mental health problem. The screening database equips and then guides teachers to act within the day-to-day interactions of school rather than relying on external expertise which may create additional burdens on the NHS.
PREVENTING DISEASE: AS Tracking provides early identification of mental health risks, as well as guidance for clinical, in school and family support in order to reduce life-time mental health disease occurrence.
BUILDING SUSTAINABILITY: AS Tracking curates a '10 year personal developmental dataset' for every child from the age of 8-18, which can become a asset owned by the young person, upon adulthood, to equip and guide them for successful and sustained transition to higher education, society and employment.
Creating a pipeline of social-emotional data to improve diagnosis
Improving diagnositic times relies upon better quality of historic and contextual information at the point of referral. Referral information is often variable. AS Tracking provides an opportunity to curate a longitudinal data set for each child to improve the accuracy and speed of diagnosis.
Critically, AS Tracking tracks the emergence of pre-clinical patterns of thinking which may be useful in understanding the emergence of an explicit condition later diagnosed.
There is increasing evidence the AS Tracking system detects risks such as self-harm, bullying and anxiety/depressive/controlled thinking concerns. We are currently investigating early evidence that it may identify and be diagnostically useful for emerging neuro-developmental conditions such as ASD, ADHD and others.
STEER operates within UK frameworks of data protection. These explicitly govern the permissions under which data may be passed to a treatment provider or used for research. STEER already operates a Privacy by Design approach to the GDPR based on name anonymisation. AS Tracking rests on a body of careful scientific research conducted over the past 17 years by STEER. Past research goals have been to develop a pioneering online cognitive bias tracking system to elicit accurate, often hidden, pupil risks before they would have been picked up by the clinical referral system.
Current research goals focus on the potential for clinical efficacy in improving diagnostic and treatment metrics for populations of adolescent children. STEER is currently designing a trial in partnership with a cohort of schools, CCG and children's services.
